All About Me
Hi everyone! I'm Haley Sielak and I'm from Wainwright, AK. It's a small town located 90 miles southwest of Utqiagvik, Alaska. The hub of the North Slope and the only access point to and from Anchorage is Utqiagvik, also known as Barrow. I'm currently pursuing a BA majoring in elementary education. Coming from a rural village, it's hard to get teachers to stay and be willing to teach. It's challenging to keep a dedicated teacher because, after a year or so, the majority of them leave. I'm returning home to teach and support my community after I graduate from college. I love to subsistence hunt, whether it's caribou or geese, spring whaling, picking berries, and I've recently started to learn how to hand sew! When I'm not hunting, I enjoy playing basketball and spending time with my family and friends.
I'm not a great drawer or an artist myself, but I do have respect for the people who are talented and have great skills. I'm not a painter or sculptor, and to be honest, I'm not sure what a "First Friday" is. I went to the museum here on campus for another class, and I enjoyed it.

I was an elementary teacher for 21 years. I am so gladdened that you want to educate and serve in rural Alaska. The need is real and so important. You made my day!
ReplyDeleteHello Haley, nice to "meet" you! I'm not a hunter but I do enjoy picking berries and learned pretty quickly that Alaskan blueberries are the most delicious blueberries after I moved here. Looking forward to future blog posts as we go through this course.
ReplyDeleteHi Haley! I'm impressed by your tenacity to become a school teacher in such a difficult situation. I also love to hunt for my family, and I'm gnawing at the bit for Caribou season! I also tried to pick up cross stitch recently, but I quickly discovered I have absolutely no patience for it. Sweet blog and art piece!
